INHUMAN Case File 01: The Midnight Forest

A tangle of tunnels spread out from Colony Alpha like roots. Many have been left abandoned or repurposed to foul ends. One struck upon a great cave deep below the surface. It is this place where Dr. Haon Kra planted the Midnight Forest.

The Zoo of Dr. Kra

Dr. Haon Kra was not satisfied with erasing diseases from the human genome. He was a genius in the field of genetics who had reached the limits of allowed knowledge. He fled to Mars with his Uplifted animal servants, having robbed the Great Genetic Database of New Geneva. He hid in the deep tunnels before finding this cave and making it his home. Natural thermal vents heated the space and made it perfect for him to build his Zoo.

There Dr. Kra resurrected long-dead species. Dinosaurs stomp the forest floor of the Midnight Forest. Gargantuan plants from the ages before mankind dig their roots into the soil. Hybrid abominations of Dr. Kra's own design run amok. He built his laboratory there and became stranger year after year, splicing his own genome with various animals until hardly anything of him could be called human.

His Uplifted hybrid animals serve him, gathering test subjects by kidnapping the vulnerable living in the forgotten corners of Colony Alpha and bringing them in secret to the Midnight Forest. To this day, Mars Force has not been able to pinpoint a definite location of the Forest, though squads have wandered in and out of the forest unable to use their locators due to jammers. Corporate Commandos are often sent to try and steal his secrets and it is said he occasionally sells priceless genetic data to continue funding his research.

It is a kind of twisted-faerie forest, disguised by holographic illusions, each tree glowing from within in shades of purple, green, and blue. Shadows dart through the bioluminescent canopy and ancient beasts and things that never should have been stalk the twisted tangle of roots that covers the cavern floor.

The Sisters of the Midnight Sun

Young girls, captured by Dr. Kra in a twisted pursuit to create a true unicorn, they escaped from his facility into the Midnight Forest. There they discovered the Midnight Sun, a fruit mysteriously growing like a parasite from a variety of plants in the forest. Dr. Kra himself can give no explanation for this fruit's appearance as its genome is completely absent from all scientific records.

The Sisters found a way to reduce the fruit to a fine powder which they smoke to give themselves visions. These drugs also fortify their bodies, improving their strength beyond most normal humans. They worship the Mother Below who stokes the fires of the earth and sends the fruits of the Midnight Sun.

They cover their skins in glowing warpaint and wear the skins of slain prehistoric creatures while riding tamed dinosaurs into battle. What they lack in advanced weaponry, they make up for in cunning and in the use of venoms and poisons harvested from the deadliest life forms in the forest.

They fight endlessly with Dr. Kra and his Zoo and protect the forest they call their home from any invaders. They can sometimes be seen at the edges of the forest, speaking their spells to the roots, urging on the growth of the trees and the spreading of the forest for such is the will of their goddess. At such times, they will war with any of the tunnel-dwelling factions but the Red Sons have grown a special hatred for them, on the grounds that they have cooties.

Children of Mother Below

The Vampires were not the first to call Mars home. The first stone, the stone which caused the planet to form from cosmic dust and gravity was a ship representing a civilization from beyond our galaxy. The flesh-ship's sleeping passengers minds melded in the ship's brain and through the eons they devised a means of reaching out from their prison, growing like roots through the volcanic depths of the Red Planet.

They were known by the Martians that would evolve on the surface. Caligulax the Violet Priest, leader of the Martians who sought out the purple tendrils in the depths of the planet in worship of the thing they would call Mother Below, yet lives. He and his followers allowed the flesh of Mother to fuse with them and they were changed by it.

The creatures in Dr. Kra's zoo are especially susceptible to the genetic corruption of the flesh from below, birthing new and strange forms, obeying a new master. Strangely these changed creatures are no friends of the Sisters who, either not really understanding the nature of their deity or perhaps serving something other than the creatures at the center of the planet. They are certainly no friends of the Zoo. Dr. Kra sees their genetic corruption as a tainting of his work, albeit a fascinating one.
